WTF: Senate passes “preemptive war” resolution

24 Sep

I was reading a report on Russia Today and this one caught my eye. Despite that the channel is funded by Kremlin its fiercly independent on American news.

Russia Today (RT) (Sept. 22, 2012)
“The US Senate voted 90-1 early Saturday on a non-binding resolution to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. Voting against the resolution was Sen. Rand Paul, arguing that the bill was a de-facto declaration of war…
The resolution advocates using methods other than containment to stop Iran, including exerting economic and diplomatic pressure. Senate Joint Resolution 41 rejects any United States policy that would rely on efforts to contain a nuclear weapons-capable Iran…
The bill states that it should not be misinterpreted as an endorsement for military force or war. But as the only senator to vote against the resolution, Paul argued that the resolution would eventually lead to war with Iran.
A vote for this resolution is a vote for the concept of preemptive war, Paul said before the Senate.”

This resolution, while expected from the Imperial Senate, has a shocking detail. Senator Bernie Sanders, the only socialist in Congress voted for the resolution! I thought he was against militarism and war but he seems to have been swayed, but this isn’t a surprise if you think he is Jewish. The two representatives in my state of Maryland voted for it. According to the vote roll call, 49 Dems, 39 GOP and 2 independents (Sanders & Lieberman, both Jewish) voted for it. Basically 89 Republicrats voted for preemptive war, a step toward war with Iran, a disasterous idea. A sad day for the supposed republic, an actual police state…

If one reads the resolution, it is troubling, a militaristic document if ask me. The resolution “reaffirms that the United States Government and the governments of other responsible countries have a vital interest in working together to prevent the Government of Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapons capability,” lowering the red line to capability, so they don’t even have to have nuclear weapons for an attack to take place! The resolution seems to allude to war. It notes that “time is limited to prevent the Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapons capability” and says that “continued and increasing economic and diplomatic pressure on the Islamic Republic of Iran,” basically sanctions and the sort must countinue until Iran’s government removes its supposed nuclear weapons facilities. After a bunch more mumbo jumbo it says “Nothing in this resolution shall be construed as an authorization for the use of force or a declaration of war” but that doesn’t reassure me.

Luckily this resolution doesn’t have the force of law, its just opinions of Congress, but still it makes me worry. As Robert Perry of Consortium News notes the propaganda the media is distributing: “The fact that Israel has a large and sophisticated roster of nuclear weapons is surely relevant in evaluating why Iran might want a nuclear weapon of its own and why Iran would not want to provoke a war with Israel even if Iran did manufacture one or two bombs. Yet this context is almost never included in U.S. news stories. U.S. journalists and their editors also might stop including hyperbolic statements that exaggerate the potential Iranian threat to Israel, such as the discredited claim that Iran has threatened to “wipe Israel off the map,” an oft-repeated refrain that resulted from a mistranslation of a comment by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad…Iranian leaders continue to deny that they even want nuclear weapons, so it makes no sense that they would threaten to use them against Israel. In February, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, who controls the armed forces, called “the possession of nuclear weapons a grave sin” and said “the proliferation of such weapons is senseless, destructive and
dangerous.” He insisted that “the Iranian nation has never pursued and will never pursue nuclear weapons.” Further, the U.S. intelligence community reported in 2007 that Iran stopped research work on a nuclear
weapon in 2003 and has not resumed that effort. That assessment has been reaffirmed periodically and
remains the position of the CIA and other intelligence agencies. Beyond that, for Iran to threaten to “annihilate” Israel would represent one of the strangest threats in world history. Here is a nation without nuclear weapons – and whose top leader disavows any intent to get nuclear weapons – supposedly threatening to use those non-existent weapons against a nation which has a large stockpile of nuclear weapons.” This should be noted by the hawkish forces in the Imperial Senate lead by people like Senators Bluementhal, Graham, Casey and Lieberman, some who are repeat offenders with militarism.

I will still push for no war with Iran, and I urge all to support a peaceful resolution that makes the Iran-Israel sphere to be a nuclear weapons free zone.

Peace,
Burkely Hermann
